Joan Waterhouse - Life and times of a "Scooter Lady"

Created by Alan 4 years ago

Most people in Poynton knew Joan or saw her.  She was known locally as “the lady under the tree” or “the scooter lady” because she could be found nearly every night sat on her mobility scooter under a tree at the roundabouts in Poynton.

Regardless of the weather or the time of year Joan sat there chatting to whoever passed and took the time to speak to her. She waved and smiled at the drivers who beeped their horns at the familiar sight of the little old lady sat under the tree.

She liked being out and about even if that was just driving to places like Sheffield and back in her car. Sadly, she had to give up her licence due to her health and that’s when she took up her post at the roundabout.
In earlier times Joan could be found in her garden happily planting flowers and vegetables with her beloved husband Ronald whom she lost in in 2011. Today behind her bungalow in Poynton there stands a tall apple tree that generations to follow will enjoy thanks to her and Ron.

Joan Trueman who had been born 1942 in Buxton, married Ronald Waterhouse in 1963. They settled in Disley to work and raise their family, but their happiest years together were spent in their bungalow in Poynton. Joan had two sons, Thomas and Alan and a daughter, Annette who in turn had their own families and of whom she was incredibly proud.

From the times she spent holidaying with her sister Ruth in Blackpool, and all the way back to her youth when her brother William had to pursue her to bring her home to Buxton, Joan was always a free spirit.

So it is fitting that her final wishes be that of freedom once again and that her ashes be scattered in the same place as her devoted husband Ronald, down in the Torrs Riverside Park amongst the flowers and the trees in the wind, the rain and the sunshine.
